AKA Healthy House
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated ® Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter of launched an initiative to bring together our international service programs into a day of service for our central Ohio families in need. Bringing together social, health, wellness, environmental and educational resources together to better serve the needs our local communities has become a signature program that we will look to continue annually.
Pink Passion Project
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated ® Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter launched an initiative to bless women with toiletry bags each spring/fall. We ask our community to join as we collect feminine hygiene toiletries that we then donate to local women's homeless shelter programs. We collect items during March-May and September -November and then donate items to selected shelter programs in central Ohio.
Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter working with Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation provides community service, mentoring and academic enrichment through the following programs.
In 1983, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter members saw a need to recognize minority students in middle school (grades 6-8). Under the leadership of Emma Lilly Henderson, it was determined that students with a 3.5 or higher grade point average should receive special recognition from the community for their academic achievements. This recognition would serve as an incentive for even higher achievements as these students made their transition from middle to high school. Since its inception in 1983, the Scholars’ Tea has become an ongoing part of Alpha Sigma Omega’s Chapter Program as part of its “Service to All Mankind.”
Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter working with Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation provide our teen mentoring program called the Akadettes Clubs. The mission of the Akadettes Club is to cultivate and to encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to alleviate problems concerning young black women, to develop young women’s interests in higher education, and to be of service to all mankind.
In 2019 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® Alpha Sigma Omega chapter designed and launched a program for middle school girls, grades 6-8. It focuses on effective public speaking, job shadowing/career exploration, the importance of scholastic achievement and excellence, and building/maintaining appropriate self-esteem. In 2021 Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter working with Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation(ASOEF) joined forces to make this mentoring program a staple program sponsored by ASOEF.
Each year the Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter working with the Achieving Standards Of Excellence Foundation, holds their annual scholarship competition. Applications for the scholarships are distributed to Central Ohio high schools and guidance counselors. We are awarding a total of ten scholarships to female and male students in Columbus and the surrounding areas. Please note that applicants must be seniors meeting state requirements for a traditional diploma and enrolling in college in 2021. The winners are recognized at the annual Scholar's Tea program each year and we are happy to say that we are able to award over $20,000 in scholarships each year to worthy individuals.
